Fearing Sushi

I think the first time I heard of sushi was in high school. My dad had gotten a cook he befriended at a Chinese restaurant to teach him how to prepare it. Dad explained the seawead. At the time the raw fish didn't bother me so much as the seaweed (not withstanding the chatter about ice cream being made from seaweed). In college, the raw fish took over as the reason I wasn't excited about trying sushi.

A few years after college, I decided as a matter of personal ethics that for me to say I didn't like something, I really ought to know for certain rather than basing it on what I might or might not like. I think this came about from thinking I didn't like asparagus but realizing I do when I tried it. To which I didn't really have a good response. So here is a list of things I like which I would not have thought I like:

  • Sushi
  • Calamari
  • Asparagus
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Yellow squash
  • Cauliflower

I don't like all sushi. I'm still learning what I do and don't like. Plus I don't have great memory, so sometimes I have to guess and hope I get lucky!

I never thought I would like Sushi either. Then we made California rolls in class and I was hooked! I <3 those. I also had Calamari in school for the first time and I love that as well. 5 years or so ago I never would have tried it. Calamari sounds good actually…I wish I had some lol

I've tried sushi once, and was not really impressed. Too chewy. Maybe it was just bad sushi?

Caroline, great point! I've had both great tasting, only okay, and blah sushi. Of course, I've had great, only okay, and blah burgers, salads, steaks, and fruit.

This was the supermarket-variety sushi from an office Christmas party a couple years back. I might have better luck with the fare at the local Japanese restaurant, but I haven't felt that brave yet! :)Something that I have tried multiple times is Thai food, and I still can't get a taste for it, even from the "real" Thai restaurants in the area.

Ok, maybe if I got to make them MYSELF in class, it would be cool, lol. I like having control over that kind of stuff… knowing what everything is! Ya know?
